5 Ways to Wow Your Boss

It's more important than ever to make sure your boss is happy with your performance. In tenuous times, your supervisor is one of the few people who may be able to shield you from a layoff. She may also be able to help you pursue a promotion down the road.

However, like any relationship, the one between you and your boss can get stale. You may grow complacent over time or you may never start off on the right foot. The good news is that it's never too late to breathe new life into how you work with your supervisor, thanks to these expert tips from Alexandra Levit, author of "New Job, New You: A Guide to Reinventing Yourself in a Bright New Career."

If you heed these five hints, you'll not only contribute to your job security; you'll also win your boss's admiration and appreciation -- as well as a little loyalty.

1. Be humble. In other words, be mindful of the fact that it's not all about you. Says Levit, "Don't approach your boss with a sense of entitlement, as though he is personally responsible for furthering your career. Instead, focus on learning what you can do to make his life easier, contribute to your company's goals, and make him look good to his boss."

2. Be honest. Everyone makes mistakes -- and you're no exception. Be forthcoming about it from the start. "Admit if you do something wrong, and then ask your boss how you can rectify the situation. Don't allow yourself to get caught in a maze of lies or excuses that will result in a loss of credibility," she advises.

3. Be respectful of the boss's time. If you think your plate is full, consider that of your boss. Use your time together wisely and efficiently. Levit suggests, "Appear in her office with a checklist of things you need to cover, and don't dwell too long on any particular subject. Your boss will be more receptive to meeting with you if she knows you'll be in and out of his office quickly."

4. Be self-sufficient. Be mindful of the fact that your supervisor doesn't have the bandwidth to hold your hand through every crisis or help you make every difficult decision that lands on your desk.

"Only approach your boss with a problem or complaint if you've explored all options for resolving it yourself. When you do, be prepared to have a solution at hand that you could implement with her help," says Levit, who is also a contributor to The Wall Street Journal.

"Choose your battles wisely, and decide carefully if bringing an issue to your boss's attention is really necessary or if you would be better off letting it go," she adds.

5. Be a "can-do" employee. Redefine the concept of a "yes man" (or "yes woman") at the office. She advises, "When your boss asks you to do something, accommodate him, if possible. The words 'I don't have time' should never escape your lips. If you know something needs to be done, do it without being prodded, and if your boss asks for help in a group setting, be the first to volunteer."

If you're always amenable, Levit believes, "Your boss will quickly come to see you as a huge asset to the team and as someone he can count on.

Your 7 Seconds of Interview Opportunity

Are you about to embark on a search for a new job? Maybe you feel that you aren't getting the challenge you need in your current position, maybe you want to pursue a path that offers greater training and development opportunities, to spread your professional wings and bolster you CV with deeper and wider experience. You might feel that your current employer isn't rewarding your efforts properly and that you can negotiate a better package elsewhere. Then again, the job you are in right now might simply not be what you want to do. Perhaps it's a job that you have tested the water with but have to conclude that you would be happier in another field, focusing your efforts on a more rewarding area. Whatever the reasons for your new job plans the chances are that you will get the best results by teaming up with a specialist recruitment agency, an agency focused on and experienced in your field.

If you are in the medical sector for example, then you will inevitably get the best new job options by working with specialist nurse employment agencies, doctors recruitment agencies or pharmacy recruitment agencies dedicated to your profession and with a clear understanding of how your skills and experience can best transfer into an interesting and well-rewarded position.

Whoever you choose to work with, be it a general or specialist recruitment agency, the time will come when you will be invited for interview. Great news that your attributes, your qualifications, on paper, have got you in front of a prospective new employer - now to finish the job and get that offer by delivering an impressive interview.

Remember though that when attending interview it's not just what you say that counts. The way you present yourself, your body language is also of crucial importance. Some psychologists believe the way you conduct yourself, the hidden messages and 'tells' you give off in an interview are THE most important aspect of the interview process. The make or break of your application, with the initial 7 seconds of any interview offering you the opportunity to really stake your claim for the job with good positive body language. Conversely, if you're not careful you might also irreparably damage your chances if you get it too wrong.

Here are some of the things to look out for in your first 7 seconds of interview:

1. Attitude. Before you enter the interview make a conscious choice about the way you will interact. Friendly, happy, approachable and curious work best.

2. Eye contact. Do the interviewer the courtesy of looking them in the eye. Make good, strong, friendly eye contact, enough for you to identify the colour of your interviewers eyes. Is there anything more off-putting than someone avoiding eye contact? Practice with friends to make it relaxed and natural.

3. Don't slouch and don't be too erect. Appearing either too relaxed or too uptight will harm your chances of success.

4. Smile. Deliver strong, sincere, smiles. Smiles tell people you are friendly and approachable. Try practicing smiling in a mirror. Research indicates that smiling activates the recipient's reward centres. Maybe you will be rewarded with a job offer.

5. Hand shakes. The quickest and most effective ways to build rapport. According to experts a handshake is equivalent to 3 hours of continuous interaction.

Illegal Interview Questions - How to Respond to Illegal Questions By Andrea Davis

Most employers have policies that prohibit interviewers from asking job candidates personal questions, especially illegal questions. But there are times when interviewers ask questions that are against the law, perhaps because they don't know the questions are illegal. One would hope that the vast majority of interviewers know which questions not to ask, but you never know what to expect so it's always a good idea to be ready for any questions that probe your personal life.

The law prohibits employers from discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race, origin and religion. Therefore, an interviewer should not ask you to disclose any personal information that has absolutely no bearing on your qualifications. The only questions that an interviewer should be asking are questions that are related to the job for which you are applying. A reputable interviewer will only ask questions that help him or her determine the following things about you:

1. Are you passionate about the business?

2. Why do you want to work in this industry?

3. Are you motivated?

4. Why do you want to work for this company?

5. What are your skills?

6. What experience do you have that will allow you to contribute to this company?

7. Are you diligent?

8. Do you demonstrate professionalism?

9. Are you creative?

10. Are you a leader?

11. Are you qualified for this job?

12. Is your personality compatible v those of the other employees?

13. What's your management style?

14. Are you a problem solver?

15. What are your accomplishments?

16. What are your personal interests and hobbies?

Here are the things an interviewer must never ask you about:

1. Race

2. Color

3. Sex

4. Religion

5. National origin

6. Birthplace

7. Age

8. Disability

9. Marital/family status

So what do you do if an interviewer asks you any personal questions? First of all, don't get defensive. Give the interviewer the benefit of the doubt. He or she may not have bad intentions. For example, the interviewer may ask you if you plan to have children. The interviewer may simply want to know what your career intentions are and may not realize it's illegal to ask a question like this. The proper approach is to ask the interviewer what his or her concerns are. You may want to say something like "Can you explain the relevance of the question to the position?". Once the interviewer responds, you can address his or her concerns by saying something like "I am extremely motivated and my career is very important to me".

Remember that you are not obligated to answer illegal interview questions. It's up to you, however, if you want to answer the question. The important thing is to avoid confrontation. There's no point in saying anything that may cause you to blow the opportunity. You can always turn down the job later if you feel this isn't the right place for you to work.
